When I arrived at KOPN in 1994, the show lineup was even more diverse and eclectic than it is today. Sunday mornings at 9:00 were occupied by a mostly acoustic show called the "Sunday Morning Show". After extensive training and monitoring the air board during national programming, I was given the opportunity to sit in and substitute during several shows at various times of the day and evening. On July 3, 1994, after sitting in and co-programming on the Sunday Morning Show, I was given the opportunity to take over the time slot when the host moved to Colorado. It was at that point that I renamed the program.

The mission of the Sunday Morning Coffeehouse was based on the storytelling I heard from Jean Shepherd along with the folk radio programs that I admired over the years: Jess Cain's late-night conversations with folks like Tom Rush debuting Joni Mitchell's Urge For Going and guitar wizard John Fahey; freeform music programs on Boulder, Colorado's KGNU and more contemporary shows like The Coffeehouse on Emerson College's WERS (no longer a separate show, unfortunately) and all of the shows on Folk Radio WUMB. All of these influences as well as a vision of folk as a process, not a product, went into the birth of the show.

One of the best parts of doing a show like this is the occasional visit from performers who are able to come into the studio for a live chat and share a little live music. It has been my priviledge to talk to folks like Dar Williams, Chip Taylor, Nancy Moran, The Kennedys, Darryl Purpose and Greg Greenway as well as local artists like Mick Byrd.
