"...the home of the best in folk and acoustic music"

So, how do I submit CDs for airplay on folk radio?

The best way to get airplay is to do some research into the radio show before contacting the dj. One of the best ways is to check out the show's playlists either on its website or via such internet lists as FOLKDJ-L. Your CD is the product of a lifetime's musical efforts, as well as your blood, sweat and tears, not to mention your hard earned dollars! You don't want to find out that because it didn't fit the format of the radio show or the station it wound up in the recycle bin (or worse). The FOLKDJ-L site contains a link to an article by Bob Blackman (host of The Folk Tradition on WKAR-FM in East Lansing, Michigan) that was originally published in Sing Out!, Volume 40 #3, in late 1995 and updated for the website. It will give you a good idea of what folk djs need from you as far as packaging, inserts and things like labeling songs with FCC-problematic language. When all else fails, send a short email to the programmer describing your music, providing links to your website for more information and samples, and asking if he/she would be interested in airing your music. If you wish to submit music for general airplay on KOPN, there is a page on KOPN's website explaining submission guidelines.

As far as submitting your music for airplay on the Sunday Morning Coffeehouse, here are a few simple guidelines:

  • Check out my playlists to see if the music I air is at all similar to yours.
  • I would prefer that your CD meets the following criteria:
    • Full-sized CD jewel case or digipak. A thin-line case gets lost among the jewel cases.
    • CD insert with lyrics. This really helps when constructing a set.
    • Tray card with track listing and track times.
    • No copy protection. I plan my show on my laptop.
    • If your CD contains song that have FCC language issues, please indicate which songs contain questionable language on the tray card. One-sheets get lost, and the fines exacted by the FCC are huge!
  • A really great idea that Borealis came up with was to include a separate card that gives a quick description of each song, listed in thematic order. That's a real help when I'm looking for a song about a specific subject.

If you think that your CD would fit my format but something I mentioned above is different, don't despair. Please contact me and we'll talk. You'll find the mailing address for the Sunday Morning Coffeehouse on my Contact page. Good luck, and thank you for being such a vital part of the folk process!
